Marvelous Monday Update 10/13/08

Weather
Northern Illinois had the most gorgeous weather over the weekend! Temps were 15+ degrees above normal... in the lower 80's. Forecasters are calling for rain today and tomorrow, but the rest of the week will be in the 70's. I'll take that, too!

Stitchy Stuff
It was announced that I was the Finish it Up! Contest winner for last quarter in one of my online stitching groups! Woo Hoo! The contest is to encourage members with UFO's to finish them up. I forgot I even entered, so I was excited to learn I won a gift certificate to an LNS of my choice. I chose Needle in a Haystack since I already have a gift card with them.

I worked on Treasured Memories Quilt Afghan (TMQ) last week. I finished the Dresden Plate:

I started and finished the Friendship Tree:

Here's what the entire afghan looks like so far:

I started another quilt square motif, but I can't remember what it is. You can see a bit of it on the middle left side.

Still Unpacking
I've been in my house a year now, and I'm *still* unpacking boxes. I decided yesterday afternoon to re-arrange my bedroom, which entailed removing the mirror from my long dresser. You might wonder: What's the big deal about that? When attached to the dresser, the height is 7 1/2 feet tall. The mirror itself is about 5ft all and 4 1/2 ft wide. Big, heavy, and awkward but I managed to get the mirror off without hurting myself (LOL) or breaking it. After that, I was able to move the dresser in front of the big picture window in my room. Next weekend, the goal is to hang my framed artwork and put my drapes up.

Where does the unpacking fit into all this? I had a ton... OK, maybe not a ton (about 10 boxes)... that have been stacked in my room for lack of better place. I unpacked/consolidated 4 boxes. It's always fun to unpack things and think: "Oh, so that's where *that* was!" I'd found stuff I'd been looking for and had no idea where it was.

I figured since I had to remove all the boxes from my room in order to move the dresser, I may as well clean under the bed. How can so many dust bunnies and furballs accumulate under there? I was thoroughly disgusted since I try to clean under the bed whenever I sweep. I think the bunnies and furries are reproducing when I'm not looking.

Ever notice how one little job turns into a big one? Or, maybe I just have ADD and get easily distracted, LOL.

I have been feeling bad because we moved 4 1/2 months ago and we still have stacks unpacked boxes, because we downsized in space but not stuff - and then we had another household worth of stuff added to the piles when my daughter's dad passed away a couple months ago. I thought I was the only person in the world who couldn't get everything put away; so glad to know I'm not alone! I must admit, though, that it has gotten to me. I've reserved a storage unit, and most of the piles will be moving there starting on Saturday! YEA!!! My goal is to bring one box a week for each household member back to the house to go through/unpack/consolidate/discard. Wish me luck!

Your weather was a lot nicer than mine, it snowed all weekend. 3 inches later...
I like your afgan. It is pretty.

I also moved a year ago and still have boxes. Glad I am not the only one LOL You accomplished quite a bit more than me this weekend. I did not even attempt to fix the framing of the Halloween piece.

We've been here for almost 4 years and we still have some things in boxes...mostly garage stuff. We initially were using the 3rd bedroom as the catch-all room (lots of boxes, knick-knacks, this-and-that, etc.), but when I got pregnant with The Little Tot, we had to clean out that room for her. Her closet still holds a lot of things that probably should go elsewhere, but it's in there nice and neat and out of daily sight, so I tend to "forget" about it. :-)

Hee hee! I get easily distracted as well, which manages to turn the simplest of jobs into an all day affair.

Nice progress on the afghan. As far as the organizing goes... are you nuts trying to move that mirror and dresser by yourself????? Danger, warning... should be written all over that. Does this mean the *extra* bedroom will be next?? Wink, wink!

Your afghan is looking great! Congrats on the win too. I hate to admit that I still have boxes packed in the shed from 8 yrs ago.
You have done a great job!

Quilt afghan is looking pretty. Congratulations on the win - let us know what stash you buy. You've been busy for sure. Haven't you noticed when you start one job, in order to fully accomplish it, it entails at least five rabbit trails that eventually back to the original job that you can now finish!

Meari,
You are so funny talking about the dust bunnies and furballs reproducing when we aren't looking and I agree with that. Sounds like you got quite a lot accomplished this past weekend. Your afghan looks great!

lol... you sound as bad as me when i get going. I've been in my house for years and still have stuff in boxes, mainly because i have nowhere to put stuff. I love the afghan, i'd love to try one someday when i get the guts...

I call it the chicken sydrome...you'll be minding your business when a chicken crosses your path and you're "oh look a chicken!" and bam you are following the chicken and forgot what you were doing...

In the 90's I moved 4 times...I think one time we kept most things packed to just move it again...that was horrible!

When are you planning to come to Texas, Meari? My place could use a thorough cleaning and I just know you'd do a much better job than me. It takes me forever to get anything done and the older I get, the slower I get. LOL

Love your afghan and congrats on winning the LNS gift certificate.

Your afghan is looking lovely, what fun designs to use. My dresser also has one of those large attached mirrors. Congrats on getting it off and the dresser moved without hurting yourself or the mirror, I'm not sure I'd have been so lucky.

That's a beautiful quilt pattern. I've always wanted to stitch an afgan and sew a matching larger quilt. Can't wait to see it finished.

the afghan is so neat! It's really coming along, too.

sounds like you had some fun "discovering" the contents of your boxes :)
