BEWARE! HP Total Care

HP Total Care is Total Crap!

Long time fans readers may remember that I bought a custom built Pavillion DV6 last year.

Last month (one month before the one year warranty expired), I couldn't get the laptop to turn on so I called HP Customer Care. The CSR got it up and running by having me remove the battery, unplug the power cord, and holding the power button down for 10 seconds. I was able to power up the laptop. Toward the end of the phone conversation, the CSR asked if I wanted to purchase a 2-year extended warranty for $199. Since my warranty was due to expire on the 6th of April, I decided to purchase it. Little did I know what was to come.

On April 20th, I couldn't get the laptop to boot up so again I called Customer Care again. This was 16 days after the one year warranty would’ve expired. Had I not purchased the extended warranty, HP would’ve said “too bad, so sad” and I’d be left with a one year old laptop that I’d have to repair.

Back to the call: The CSR diagnosed the problem as hard drive failure. I had expectations that a product such as HP would not have such a problem with a fairly new machine. In doing some research on the internet, however, I’ve found that this particular problem on HP’s products goes back YEARS!

A “ticket” was submitted by the CSR to have the hard drive and recovery discs sent to me. I was told HP doesn’t deliver to PO Boxes so I told him that it could be shipped to my work address, and emphasized that it was my work address and not where the laptop was. An appointment was set up to have a technician come install the hard drive on the morning of April 27th. According to HP, a FOUR HOUR window is required which means I had to sit around and wait for four hours. I had to reschedule and cancel appointments, including a medical appointment so I could sit and wait for four hours!

Two days prior to the scheduled date, I received emails and calls from HP asking if the hardware and software arrived. I also received what I perceived as an email reminder that a technician was scheduled to come on the 27th and that the service address was at my work address! I called HP Customer Care to tell them and the CSR told me, “Oh, just tell the technician when he calls”.

On April 26th at 8PM (the night before the scheduled technician arrival), I received a call from HP telling me ALL the service technicians were "busy" and wouldn't be coming. I was LIVID! Not only had I cleared my appointments for the morning and it was too late to schedule them back in, I had received emails just two days prior that a technician was coming! The CSR kept telling me she understood my frustration and guaranteed they were doing the best job possible. Seriously? If HP Customer Care thinks their service is the best, they are in serious denial. The CSR must've repeated the phrase at least three times before I finally said "Look, your guarantee doesn't mean squat to me so quit repeating it over and over!" I couldn’t foresee my frustration level was going to increase...

The next morning, I called HP's Customer Care again and demanded to talk to a supervisor, however the CSR wouldn't transfer me until *after* I repeated the entire tale again. Once the supervisor got on the line, I had to repeat the story again! He supposedly escalated my ticket and told me a technician would be calling me within an hour. Guess what? Over an hour later, no technican had called.

I called HP Customer Care once again. By this time, I was out running errands and didn't have my ticket number and told the CSR that. What is the first thing he asked me after my name? "Ma'am, do you have your ticket number?" HP Customer Care truly does NOT listen. The CSR looked up my name and told me I had two laptops... one under warranty and one not. No, I have one laptop. The he tried to inform me that it's not their "policy" to have a technician call in an hour. That it takes 24-48 hours to set up appointments. I responded back that I didn't care what the policy was, that the supervisor I talked to earlier told me a technician would be calling within an hour. I asked to speak to another supervisor.

Supervisor #2 told me Supervisor #1 didn't escalate it my issue properly… that he just sent it to dispatch. After an hour on the phone explaining the entire thing AGAIN, he put me on hold so that he could get a conference call with a case manager. He asked me for a 2-3 hour time frame on Sunday, April 28th for a technician to come and for a case manager to call. He told me a technician would be coming to install the HD and recovery discs (on the 28th), making sure that the computer was in running order before he left. Guess what? No one called. No one showed up either.

By this time, my frustration level was wayyyy higher than I am tall. I was so irritated and tired of the service HP Total Care had not provided. I made yet another call to HP. The CSR put me on hold while he read the notes on my account (because I told him to... I refused to repeat the story again). After about 5 minutes on hold, I was disconnected!I called back again. CSR #2 said he saw in the system that I called a few minutes prior and that a request was put in to talk to a case manager. This CSR told me that case managers don't work on the weekend (remember earlier, Supervisor #2 told me one would be calling on Sunday?), that he didn't care what was said previously, they only go by what's in the system and somewhere along the line they had put in a request for my hard drive to be replaced on May 4th! Since the case was already "escalated", this CSR refused to give me to another supervisor because the issue was being "addressed" and that was the end of it.

On April 29th at 8:22PM, I received a voicemail message from case manager “Jonathon”. What’s with the late night phone calls? I work for a living and have to get up early. A second voicemail was received 12:32PM the next day. I returned the call at 6:21PM after I got home from work.

I did not reach Jonathon, but another case manager in queue who had an accent that I had difficulty understanding. When I asked to either transfer me to Jonathon or another case manager who spoke clear English, I was told that I could communicate via email. I asked him how he thought I would do that since I have ONE computer that was broken. Then he asked, “What’s the problem with your computer?” I responded, “Seriously? Have you not read the notes on my account?” He said, “I’m doing that right now.” I hung up on him, frustrated once again.

On May 1st, I received a call from a repair technician located in Peoria. Peoria is 3 hours south of where I live! Through the phone conversation, I learned that he thought he was going to the town I work in, which is 2 hours north of Peoria.

Keep in mind that I had the hard drive shipped to where I work because HP would not ship it to a PO Box. When I received the email stating where HP “thought” the service address was, I immediately called HP and told them. The woman I talked to said, “Oh, just let the technician know when he calls.” I ALSO told one of the “supervisors” during many round-and-round phone calls to them where the service address was... had to spell out my street address and city. Yet, they STILL had my work address as the place to repair my laptop!

The technician laughed at my complaints about HP and gave excuses as to HP’s poor customer service. He said he didn’t understand why they would want someone from so far away to repair the laptop. He said he’d contact HP and get back to me. On May 2nd, the technician from Peoria left a voicemail message around 12:30 to confirm the repair on Saturday morning, May 4th.

Since I have added a second hard drive to a desktop PC years ago (not an easy task to connect two HD's, btw), I decided that a laptop couldn't be that hard. I opened the box HP sent me to find step-by-step instructions on how to do it! It took me all of 8 minutes to remove the faulty one and install the new one. Yet, HP wanted a technician to drive 3 hours to do this??? Installing the OS took longer... several hours to reinstall using the restore disks sent by HP.

On May 3rd, I used the box and packaging material that the replacement hard drive came in to return the failed hard drive. I put the return slip in with it and placed the Fed Ex return label (both provided by HP) on the outside of the box. I dropped it in the Fed Ex pick up box located on the lower level of the local banking center building. It was due for pick up at 5:45pm on the same day. I called HP and politely told them to cancel the technician and to note I returned the hard drive.

When I purchased the HP Total Care warranty, I received an email stating I could and I quote exactly, "take full advantage of HP's award winning Total Care service and support programs, giving you the peace of mind and confidence that comes with knowing that HP will take care of you if you need help with your HP or Compaq products."

Based on my experience, I did not receive award winning service nor did I feel HP "took care" of me. Not only did I get poor service, I was given false and misinformation. I spent hours on the phone with HP's Total "Care" and received nothing but VERY HIGH levels of frustration and irritability.

The only good thing I have to say is that HP shipped the replacement hard drive and restoration CD's relatively quickly. HP's "Total Care" needs some serious help!

I sincerely hope that I do not have any other problems with this HP laptop now that I have experienced HP's Total "Care".

Just Like Christmas (Almost)!

Last week was almost as good as being a kid on Christmas Day.

My new laptop arrived on Thursday. I had it shipped to work so it was like getting a new toy at Christmas and not being able to play with it! I spent most of Friday making the recovery disks (took hours!), re-installing software and getting my printer set up.

I was never able to get my Graphire graphics pad to work with my other laptop so I haven't used it in about 4 years. I bought it back when I used Win98 or XP. A search on the internet brought me to a guy who had a driver for Win7 and I was so excited when I installed it and it worked with my new laptop!

If you've read my blog, you'd know I bought a cooling pad for the laptop... the CP works awesome. I was on the computer practically all day and the bottom of the laptop didn't even get warm. I highly recommend the Rosewill RNA-7600W. Unlike some other CP's, it has an AC power source as well as USB and a 4-port USB hub. I was able to use the hub with no problems.

I rented a Blue-Ray DVD and tried the BR player that came as a "free" upgrade to the laptop. I also tried out Hulu. Both gave me a chance to try the HDMI cable in order to watch them on my 1080p TV. The cable was easy-peasy... all I did was plug it in and change the TV setting to HDMI. The DVD player automatically started, I clicked the on screen remote, and the viewing experience started.

I upgraded from a regular 6-cell battery to a 9-cell battery. Once the battery is charged 100% it will run my laptop for a good 8 hours. I'm loving that!

Overall, I like the new laptop. The coolest thing is that it has a fingerprint reader that can be used to logon to the computer and login to whatever websites I set up. It won't work with fingers not scanned (I tried, LOL). One thing I'm still getting the hang of is the two-finger scrolling. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. I'm sure it's user error. I have a keypad on this laptop. Being in the accounting field... I missed having one on my other laptop.

STITCHY STUFF
I stitched Flower & Bee back in 2009. I finished it into a box last week. It was the first time I tried to do an octagon shape. I'm happy with how it turned out!

Flower & Bee
Designer: Annalee Wait Designs
Fabric: 28ct Buttermilk Linen
Fibers: DMC, GAST
Embellishments: White Trim

I also received Part One of Fleurs et Papillons SAL on Thursday. So, I started another new project! Now I have 3 projects going and they're all BAPS. The original design called for three colors: 2 shades of pink and white. I changed the colors to my liking. Here's the floss toss:

I made a good bit of progress on it using Qsnaps and the Elan lap stand:

I didn't realize the photo was so dark.
The fabric color is more accurate in the floss toss pic.

I also worked on JG, and ended up frogging a small section because I stitched one of the bonsai trees ONE stitch too tall and it threw the bottom corner of the corner ornament off. Since everything on JG is so close together and contains specialty stitches, there was no way I could leave it and stitch around it.

Other WIP photos can be seen HERE.

QUESTION:
Earlier this year, I finished stitching Blossom Splendor. It's about 18x20 in size. I want to store it until I can get two other companion pieces stitched, and then frame them all the same. To those of you who stitch and store your pieces, how do you store them longterm? My pieces may be in storage for a couple years before I get around to framing them.

Until next time,

Biting The Bullet

It's been close to a month since my laptop decided it didn't love me anymore to take a permanent rest. I finally bit the bullet and ordered a customized HP dv6t Quad Edition laptop. The best part? By using promo codes, coupons, and financing incentives I saved 65% off the original upgrade price! I have to say the "dino" is really, really, really (Did I say REALLY?) getting on my nerves, LOL.

While I was on my shopping spree, I bought a cooling mat as well. I decided on a Rosewill mat that is made of aluminum (Great heat sink, I'm told) not plastic. It offers the flexibility of using an AC power cord or USB power from the laptop. It also has a 4-port USB hub. Newegg had an instant rebate of $20 with free shipping. Can't beat that!

Since I plan on watching Hulu with my laptop, I also splurged on a 15ft HDMI cable for less than $12 with free shipping, too. I should be set for computer related purchases for a while.

The cooling mat and HDMI cable have already arrived. If the notification from Fed Ex is correct, I should have the laptop in my hot little (OK, maybe not so little) hands on Thursday. Once I get it set up, the "Dino" is going bye-bye.

COOKING
I tried a new recipe last week: Garlic Cheddar Chicken. It was soooo good. The outside had a crispy goodness and the inside was the moistest chicken ever! I served it with steamed broccoli and mashed red potatoes with the skins left on. The BF made a yummy wine brown gravy.

STITCHY STUFF
Remember how I said I was going to start a new project? Well, I did! I started the first in the series of Sampler aux Bouquets by Jardin Prive. Photos of what the projects will look like can be seen HERE.

I had forgotten that I had a small, portable lap stand: the Elan by Artisan Designs. I had the brainstorm idea that it might be easier to learn how to stitch two-handed on it before using the 33" wide K's Creations lap stand. Hmmm... 17" vs. 33", what do you think? I do have to say that the Elan is a beautifully crafted and well thought out piece of equipment.

I tried to stitch two-handed on JG once before (without a lap stand) and couldn't get the hang of it. Now that I've used a lap stand, I think the issue was not having JG on a lapstand. Trying to balance a 26" scroll frame and stitching two-handed is not the easiest thing! In stitching on Sampler aux Bouquets, it only took me a day to get the hang of two-handed stitching. I worked on SaB all last week and am almost 3/4 done with the first chart:

This week, I will be stitching on JG with the K's Creations lap stand. So, stop back next week for its update!

Marvelous Monday Update 3/26/12

WEATHER
For the past couple of weeks, the weather has been absolutely gorgeous for this time of year. We've had above normal temps which has made everything grow and turn green... including the grass. I actually had to mow my yard yesterday, and it's only March! It was so tall, my yard now looks like a harvested hay field, LOL.

Last week marked the official day of spring, and I actually saw a robin on that day. I filled my bird feeders and have already attracted cardinals and other birds.

THE WRIST
Thank you all for your concern regarding my suicide attempt puncture wound by way of pruning shears. It's healing up nicely. No sign of infection, so I think I will live.

COMPUTER WOES
Last fall when I was finishing up school, my laptop started acting up. Sometimes, it'd tell me I didn't have an operating system. A couple times I got the BSOD (blue screen of death). Other times, it would boot up and just give me a black screen. I invested $150 to keep it going... only to have it die last week. In talking to the IT guy at work, he said it sounds like something went bad on the motherboard and that it died a slow death, LOL.

What's a girl to do? She used what is affectionately called the dinosaur (i.e. "dino") computer. It's a cast off from work pre-merger... probably about 8 years old, and slowerrrrrr than molasses! Doing digital manipulations is like pulling teeth with a pair of needle nose pliers. I spent 9 hours last Friday transferring all my data files and photos from Zip 100 disks and 3.5" diskettes to my hard drive. I had 19 Zips and about 25 diskettes. I was ready to pull my hair out by the time I got done. It took what seemed like F-O-R-E-V-E-R! The other problem I have is that last year I bought a new wireless laser printer. My dino doesn't have wireless capabilities! So, I'm not able to print anything.

I couldn't take it anymore, so I started doing research on a new laptop. If you know me, you know that I will research a product to death before I buy. Since it has been almost 5 years since I bought my last laptop, I had a chat with the IT guy about what specs I should look into. It helped me make my decision.

It's only a matter of time before I get a new one. Cuz I just can't take it anymore! Once I get a new laptop, the dino will be going as well as a 15yr old Gateway that the kids used when they were little.

STITCHY STUFF
I would like to send a big THANK YOU to Maggee of Stitching Devotee for giving me a K's Creations Lap frame which adjusts to hold 22-34" scroll rods. It's perfect for the Japanese Garden project I'm working on.

I was so excited when I got it, I put JG on it right away even though I knew I wouldn't be working on it until this week.

Front View

Back View

What's great about this lap frame is that when I'm not using it, it folds flat for storage. Other than being a few inches longer than my other scroll rods, it doesn't take up extra room.

Folded Flat

Now, I just have to learn how to stitch two-handed!

Marvelous Monday Update 10/17/2011

SICK 'PUTER
At some point over the past two months, some ingrate who has nothing better to do website managed to download spyware/malware onto my laptop. You can read about the About:Blank problem HERE. It's not a contagious kind of spyware... it just slows your computer wayyyy down. I really noticed it toward the end of this last semester of school. Since I couldn't remove it with the programs I have, I took it to a computer repair place. It seems to be working fine now.. Just in time for the new semester to start.

GIVEAWAYS
Kathy of A Stitcher's Heirloom is hosting her first ever giveaway. I just love the name of her blog, don't you? Click on over to see her stitchy projects!

Lisa of Hockey Mom Stitchin' Hobby is hosting a 3-100-500 giveaway to celebrate her blogversary. Check it out, as well as her beautiful stitching project.

PRIZE and RAK's
Dee in TN (no blog) hosted a reindeer contest. We had to guess how many reindeer charts she had chosen to stitch out of the recent stash haul of magazines she acquired. Becky actually won, but she deferred to the next person (moi!) since she won Dee's last contest. Here's what I won:

Sue of Sue's Stitching, Reading, and Family sent me an awesome RAK! She's such a sweetheart, and the list Mom of ESC. Look what she sent me:

The JCS Halloween Ornament issue
-and-
The October issue of Cross Stitch and Needlework

I've already picked out several things I want to stitch up out of all three mags! Thank you so much Dee and Sue *big smiles*

Lisa of Mad Stitches also RAK'd me a couple of charts. First up is Momiji (I call them Kokeshi) Dolls:

She also sent me Spring Fairy by Joan Elliott:

Thank you, Lisa!

STITCHY STUFF
I was able to complete Part 2 of Purple Garden. I've substituted pink for some of the colors in the design.

Last week, I showed the ornament I sent for the "Words of Christmas" exchange. Over the weekend, I received my ornament from Nancy in CA. I think it turned out beautifully!

Thank you, Nancy!

I'm also working on two "secret" stitching projects, which I can't show yet.

Marvelous Monday Update 2/1/2010

SCHOOL
One word....

This week is going to be a brutal one. I have tests in both classes.

Remember how boring interesting I told you Ethics class is? First test is over SIX chapters. Our little group project is chugging along. We had to pick a "controversial" topic and are in the process of discussion (debate?) on each side of the issue. I took the side of "Uniforms are an equalizer. Children are in school to learn, not flaunt there social status, be fashionistas, etc." My two team mates chose the "other" side. Personally, I really don't care which side I'm on but I do think that children are in school to learn. Period. If uniforms help to achieve that, I say go for it.

The instructor for my IA II class assigned a TON of homework questions in preparation for the test. I managed to finish all of them over the weekend. Hopefully, I'll do as well on Test #2 as I did on the first one.

BELATED BIRTHDAY GIFTIES
I received more birthday gift certificates from bloggy friends... Carolyn and Sharmila. You know, you sure know how to make a girl smile. You gals are the best! I'm going to have one fantastic shopping spree . Thank you very much to both of you!

I received another card from the CSE BFC. It traveled across the big pond from Lily in England. She sent it over a week ago and hoped it'd get here in time, but the postal system didn't cooperate, lol. Look at this neat tri-fold card:

Update: I also received a GC from one of the club members that hadn't sent me a gift according the the rules. There's a bit of controversy surrounding it that I won't get into. Regardless, I'm appreciative. Thank you very much.

STITCHY STUFF
Julie from I'll Cross That Leg hosted her first giveaway a while back. I was the LUCKY winner! Yay for me!!

Julie sent a chart by Bobbie G called "Life's Journey", along with fabric and floss to stitch it up. She also included a bundle of fabric and a pretty pair of scissors. Thank you so much, Julie!

The photo above doesn't show this very well. It's a froggie holding onto a candy cane! I got a giggle out of this .

I'm feeling pretty blessed. I just found out that I am the winner of Lorraine's blogversary giveaway. Click on over to Maltese7 Cross Stitch to see what it is!

Guess what?!? I actually did some stitching last week (mostly on my lunch hour) -and- I had a finish! I don't have photos yet, since I'm not finished with making it into a cube. Going to JoAnn Fabrics on my lunch hour today :)

DIAL-UP INTERNET HELP
I'm in need of recommendations for an inexpensive, decent, dial-up internet provider. I have a friend who lives out in an area of the county who can't get DSL service. The only option is dial-up at this point. I tried installing NetZero last night and got nowhere. Couldn't even get to the point of registering; each time the software logged on, it immediately got kicked off once explorer opened up. After four hours of that, I'm giving up on NetZero. So, I was hoping if any of my readers use a dial-up service that isn't local to them, they could me some recommendations???

Marvelous Monday Update 1/11/10

If it ain't one thing, it's another.... LOL

LAPTOP
Lucky for me, I have a desktop computer and a laptop computer. Unlucky for me, the laptop power cord had been acting up (or at least that's what I thought was wrong) and the battery wasn't getting charged. Even more unlucky is the desktop computer sits in my 3-season room that I keep closed off during the winter months. It's about 32F out there right now. Shortly after Christmas, I ordered a new power cord (hoping it was the problem child). It arrived in the mail last week. Score!! The laptop is back in business, and I don't have freeze my patooties off trying to use the desktop. It's too bad they just don't sell the top portion of the photo because that's the part that died. Oh well.

HOMESTEAD CHRONICLES
Why do things always seem to break at the most inopportune times??? During the freezing, frigid temps my garage door opener decided not to cooperate. It opened halfway... for which I am thankful, because the side door has a lock on it and I don't have a key! So, I step inside the garage and push the button, the door goes up about 1 1/2 feet and decides to die completely. No power. Fuse box in the garage. Check. Circuit Box in the house. Check. Reset button on opener. None. Fast forward a week or so. I climb up on a ladder for the 2nd time to see if the wiring is loose. Out of the corner of my eye, I spy the outlet attached to the rafters where the opener is plugged in. It appears that the vibrations from the garage door opener, made the plug come loose. Not enough to be obvious, but enough where the opener wasn't getting electricity. *Hmph* For a week and half I'd been getting in and out of the car to manually open the garage door because.... the darn thing wasn't plugged in!

STITCHY STUFF
Absolutely no stitching done last week. I guess I was mentally gearing myself up for school to start, so I focused on getting things in order for that. I did get a stitchy windfall, though. One of the ladies on the freecycle group listed a bunch of items she was wanting to get rid of. One was a "bunch of cross stitch thread". I emailed her, and she said it was mine. :) She also happened to be coming into town that day, so she delivered it. How can you beat that?!

Most of it was DMC, but there was a couple JP Coates and maybe a dozen Anchor skeins.

Marvelous Monday Update 1/5/09

Dating
OK, OK... Since both Nancy and Chiloe are chomping at the bit for some news on my latest dating adventure, here goes:

Due to the holidays and weather, it'd been about three weeks since C and I had our second date. 3 weeks! In all that time, he texted and/or called almost every day. That impressed me since most men would've lost interest early on.

Finally we had our 3rd date. Both of us were looking forward to it. :) He invited me out to dinner on New Year's Eve... to a restaurant he'd gotten a gift certificate at Christmas. It was an awesome restaurant located in a small mall and you'd never guess it was as nice as it was from the outside. The food was a bit pricey (IMO) and definitely not big portions, if you're a hearty eater like C is. Poor guy was still hungry afterwards! Reminded me of the mastercard "priceless" commercial where the couple waited weeks to get into a swanky restaurant only to find elf-sized portions and then went to a convenience mart afterwards! LOL OK, our food wasn't elf-sized... but when he said he was still hungry, that commercial popped into my head. Me? I had plenty to eat, and couldn't finish it all. Conversation was light and fun... although, I think the guy is addicted to football. Is there a 12-step program? ;-)

Again, he opened car and restaurant doors for me and offered assistance when I was trying to walk through the snow (in heels!). I had a conversation with my BFF and she told me she's offended when men do this for her. She will actually tell them: "I can get the door myself, thank you!" Personally, I see it as gentlemanly and I LOVE it. How about you ladies out there? Do you get offended, or do you like it?

I made it an early night because we both worked that day. He worked 10 hours I think, and had plans to work the next day. Neither of us made it to midnight, LOL. I do find it curiously odd that he hasn't asked my last name. What do ya'll think?

I've come to the conclusion after the 3rd date that he's lost interest. Why do I think that? He went from calling and texting practically every day to not. Add to it, he said he would call on two different occassions and didn't.

Here's another question my BFF and I have pondered: Why do the ones we like disappear, and the ones we want to go away hang on like a bad disease?

Stitchy Stuff
Amazed. Flattered. Proud. Surprised. Yeah, I'm all of those things whenever someone makes a random posting and I find out that my "stuff" is being featured on websites I'd never heard of. I recently found out that my tutorials are being featured on the Designers Forum! How cool is that??

I put in a few hours of stitching on JG (Hey Nancy, are you listening?!). Right now I'm working on one of four stork motifs that are stitched over-one. Talk about tedious!! I even took some pics of my progress. My last update, it looked like THIS. Here's what it looks like now, after 122½ hours:

School
This is the last week of my free-wheeling vacation from school. Classes start back up next week. :( It was fun while it lasted, though!

Present For Me!

Since I have no SO in my life, I bought myself a Christmas/early Birthday present. :) It's a 320GB Western Digital My Passport (gloss cobalt blue) portable hard drive. I'm going to use it to backup my files (mostly photos), organize them, and then burn them to CD's or DVD's.

This thing is so tiny, it's amazing... It fits into a pocket!
Height: 6/10"
Length: 5"
Width: 3"
Weight: less than 1/2 lb.

Very sleek and it contains data encryption software. :D Can you tell I'm a techno geek, as well?

More Bathroom "Stuff"
With a heading like that, I bet you're wondering: "What's she going to talk about now?!" LOL What started out as a simple task, turned into SO much more. I decided to re-caulk the shower surround and tub on Friday night. Then I decided since I was already caulking, I might as well remove the old, nasty stuff on the outside of the tub by the linoleum on the floor. Suffice to say that whoever put in the linoleum did a crappy job and in some places there's a gap of 1/2" that needed to be filled with caulk. Even so, it looks 100 times better than it did before.

On Saturday, I got the "bright" idea to replace the painted over and starting to rust hinges of the bathroom cabinet. I bought new hinges and took the cabinet doors off. Then decided I couldn't put the doors back on without repainting them (everything in my house needs repainted!). I primered them.

Did I mention the window in the tub/shower area? No??? Well, it needed re-caulking too. So yes, I caulked... and primered the trim and ledge for it also.

The paint on the trim around the bathroom door has been peeling since I moved here. In some places it was showing off the harvest gold color underneath. Ahh, yes... "beautiful". However, the polka-dot yellow and white just wasn't doing *it* for me. What could I do but to primer THAT, too?!? I have one piece of trim to do behind the door where the hinges are, and then I can do the actual painting.

Stay tuned for the next installment of the Homestead Chronicles!

The Ultimate Steal

During my career as a student, I've been blessed and happy that being a student has some excellent perks.

Years ago, I took a photography class and with that class I was entitled to purchase the professional version of Photoshop for a ridiculously low price, saving hundreds of dollars.

Today, I was turned on to what Microsoft calls "The Ultimate Steal." Under this program, I am eligible to purchase the Microsoft Office Ultimate 2007 Suite for $60! The software retails for almost $700!!! It seems I learned about this just in time... it expires April 30, 2008. More about it HERE.

You may want to pony up the extra $13 for a CD if you have dial-up because it took 12 hours for me to download parts 1 & 2 (2 is optional), and I have DSL.

The following programs are included in this offer: Word 2007, Powerpoint 2007, Office Outlook 2007 with Business Contact Manager, Accounting Express (You can also get this as a free download), Access 2007, Excel 2007, InfoPath 2007, Groove 2007, OneNote 2007, and Publisher 2007. All for $60!

You DO have to be a registered student at a college. If you are contacted to provide proof and can't, you will be required to pay full price for the software.

My only gripe is: I learned about it from an offshoot Freecycle group. Why aren't instructors aware of this? Why aren't they telling students?? Had I known about this earlier in the semester, it would've saved me from trekking out to the college in subzero temps so I could do my assignments. Now that I know about it, I can work on my Access homework any hour of the day. Yay!!
