Marvelous Monday Update 12/16/13

Yikes... How can it be that over a month has passed since I last made a blog update.  Alas, I've been busy working out (lost 10lbs so far, Yay!) and trying to get ready for the holidays.

HOLIDAYS
Last weekend, I managed to get up all my Christmas decorations.  Normally, I only put up my two 4ft trees.  However, this year I am hosting the family Christmas so the big tree had to be put up as well as more decorations.  So far, I have 12 family members confirmed and it could be upwards of 18 people total.

STITCHY STUFF
I've been focusing the bulk of my stitching time on a mailart piece.  Several months ago, Anne of Dolls Musings and I agreed to do a private exchange for a Christmas mailart.  This is the second private exchange I've done and am pleased that it worked out.  The person I did the first exchange with flaked out on her end, but I digress.  This is what I received from Anne:

I just love it! I had it with me when I visited my parents over the weekend, and even they were intrigued by it. My Dad was so interested that he pulled out the Atlas to see where Anne was from, LOL. Anne has not received hers yet, so I will have to wait to show pics.

Next up is progress on Balloon Glow which is the project I work on during my lunch hour.

Since I haven't worked on Yuku's backstitching for months, I plan on working on that project for a while. I've been itching to start a new project, but no-no-no! I have other things I need to work on first. *slaps hand* No new projects!

As part of their Black Friday sale, JoAnn Fabrics had OttLites for $20 which also included free shipping!  I couldn't pass up a deal like that (especially since I'd been kicking myself for not getting one back in October when they were $24.95).  I really wanted the light green one, but they were already sold out by the time I got up on Black Friday.

Winner!  Winner!  I was a lucky winner of a 12 Days of Christmas celebration at the Stitcher's Village.  From Glendon Place, I received a chart and beautiful floss.

SEWING
I was in a sewing mood a couple weeks back. Inspired by some bags I saw at the PALS retreat, I made a couple of lined project bags. I sent this one to Pam as a birthday gift:

I made this one for myself to hold my work stitching project:

I have some cute cupcake fabric that I want to make another one to keep my home project in.

WORK
My one year anniversary was last week!  Hard to believe it's been a year already.  I know I'm probably still in the "honeymoon" phase, but I have to say that it's the best move I've ever made.  Btw, how long does the honeymoon phase last?

Those of us who have December anniversaries get to celebrate by having "Breakfast with the President" on Thursday.  I heard through the grapevine that we get gifts!

Until next time....

Marvelous Monday Update 8/13/12

SUMMER OLYMPICS
About 6 months ago, the signal for NBC stopped reaching my TV.  I was really disappointed to miss the Olympics as the games are one of the very few sporting events I like to watch.  On Friday, the signal came back!  I was able to watch a few of the remaining events and the closing ceremonies.

Congratulations to the USA athletes on doing so well!

FRUSTRATING MONTH
Last month, I decided to clean the carpet in my living room... The only room in my house that has carpet.  I sprayed the spots on my carpet, plugged in the Bissell cleaner.  I've had this carpet/upolstery cleaner for 11 years and it's worked beautifully.  This time, it was not meant to be.

When I pushed it forward, it made a horrible dragging sound. I went online and found a solution on the Bissell website. Easy enough. I did what it said.... the front end still drug across the carpet and made the terrible noise. I then called "Customer Care" and got a lady with a terrible accent. I told her the problem and explained what I did per the Bissell website. I kid you not, she told me to do what I just told her I did.... not just once but multiple times. Within 15 minutes, I was so frustrated that my sarcasm came out big time. Thirty minutes later and after being put on hold multiple times (When I say multiple, I mean in excess of 3 times), she told me that I needed to take it to an authorized service center. Since it's not under warranty, I asked her if there was going to be a fee (which I knew there would be). After she confirmed it, I said "Well then I can take it to ANY service center... not necessarily an authorized one!" Then I told her in no uncertain terms that I was not happy with the customer service seeing as I told her at the beginning of the phone call what I did according to their website and she could've told me to take it to a service center right then rather than waste and hour of my time having me take it apart only to do the same thing I already did. When she went into her canned speech about how customer care was doing their best.... I hung up on her. I was soooo frustrated at that point! So, I had spot pretreater all over my carpet and nothing to clean it up with.
Mission #1 - Failure.

After I told the tale of my woes to the BF, he looked at the carpet cleaner. I told him what I did. He took the same piece off and said there was a little clip on it that was broken. The little clip holds the piece up so it doesn't drag across the carpet. Funny thing is that I looked at buying a replacement part before I even called customer service! The part ended up costing $10.55 including shipping.  The Bissell site or "Customer Care" didn't say anything about replacing the part.... only removing it and re-installing it.

Fast forward a couple of weeks.  Part is installed and pretreater is once again sprayed on the carpeting.  Furniture extracted from living room.  I turned on the Bissell only to have water spraying out of the upolstery hose.  What the ?!?!  No matter what I tried, I couldn't get it to stop.  Most of you know that I'm pretty handy around the house so I was really disgusted at the Bissell. I pushed it in the corner of the kitchen and put the furniture back.  Again, pretreater all over and nothing to clean it up. Humph!
Mission #2 - Failure.

The next time the BF came over, he started to look over the Bissell to try and figure out the problem. Before he dismantled it, a lightbulb went off above my head. Bzz--Bzzt!  Turns out I had the upolstery attachment in its holder with the sprayer button wedged against the side... which is why water sprayed all over! Duh... I felt so stupid.

This brings me to last Friday.  Mission #3! I removed all the furniture from the living room and pulled out the Bissell again.  You know the routine by now.... More pretreater on the carpet. Some of the stains from the previous owners re-surfaced, and high traffic areas really needed it!

Mission #3 - Accomplished!!

PHOTO MIGRATION
Last week, I and many other Multiply users received a notice that the site will discontinue blog and photo hosting services as of December 1st.  It's really unfortunate as I really liked using the site for my photos.  After trying many free photo hosting sites (snapgalaxy, dotphoto, flickr, fotki, bravenet, photobucket, mejuba, picasa), I have decided to move my photos to Webshots.  It's got many of the same features Multiply had for their photo gallery.  I've been a member of WS since 2002, I just never used their site until now.

SEWING
A few weeks ago, the local thrift shop had a clothing sale... everything was $1.  I bought a 3-piece suit for $3.  It came with a blazer, skirt, and slacks -- nice additions for my work wardrobe.  The skirt was floor length... definitely needed to be shortened, and the slacks needed to be hemmed.  I knew I could hem the slacks, no problem.  Even though I've sewed clothing from scratch (in high school), I've never attempted major tailoring jobs.  I figured if I screwed it up, I was only out $3, right?  Right!

I have a pencil skirt that I just love, so I used it to pattern the skirt overhaul.  I shortened the sleeves on the jacket, and took in the jacket a bit.  I also put blind hems on the slacks.  Everything fits great now!

STITCHY STUFF
I finished up Part 4 of Fleurs et Papillions last week.  Here's what it looked like before:

and now it's 2/3 done:
Since I finished Part 4 of Fleurs, I switched projects and worked on Sampler aux Bouquets by Jardin Prive.  Here's what it looked like before:

A few days progress.... several motifs are complete:

Marvelous Monday Update 9/19/11

SCHOOL
This past week was the easiest of weeks since the semester started. The next three weeks will be busy with homework, quiz, term paper, and finals. This week, I need to register for my LAST class. Woo Hoo!

4 FINISHES!
Different kind of stitchy finishes, but fun nonetheless. It's been ages since I pulled out the sewing machine to do anything other than clothing repairs. To actually "create" was a lot of fun!

Baby Bibs!

One side is cotton, the other side is flannel. Aren't they the cutest? I didn't have a live model, so I opted for the next best thing:

Now, don't laugh at her. She's been "well loved". My Dad brought her home when I was two years old. As my Mom tells it, she was taller than I was. Can you picture a two-year old dragging around a doll bigger than herself? It's no wonder the poor baby doesn't have hair on the back of her head! I still remember her new in the box. I don't remember the clothes she had on, but she came with regular clothes and pastel orange footie pajamas and a bottle that she could hold. Over the years, I lost her clothes and substituted real baby clothes. I used to have an entire suitcase of clothes for her and my baby doll baby. As you can see, at some point I decided she needed a manicure.

This brings me to a question: Do you have any toys from your childhood?

During my sewing escapade, I had to dig through my tubs of fabric.

Some of it is vintage, some is yardage, some are fat quarters. I realized (yet *another* project) that I need to get it more organized so that I can see at a glance what I have if I want to finish a stitched project, or sew something. I got as far as this in organization:

These are folded into fat quarter size (and is only a small portion of my fabric stash). Does anyone have good ideas for storage? I store my fabric bins in an unfinished basement in sealed tubs to keep out creepy-crawlies and protected from water seepage that sometimes occurs.

RAK'd
Jenn from This Witch's Stitches sent me a dragonfly chart. I am thinking about stitching it as a scissor fob. Thank you, Jennifer!

STITCHY STUFF
Over the past couple weeks, a few of my readers have asked about the color floss I'm using the the iStitch SAL. It's a varigated Anchor floss (1315) called "Flame".

Carol sent out Part 4 on Friday and I stitched it up last night.

I stitched a bit on Blossom Splendor, too. Soon, I'll be starting another page!

I did have a stitchy finish, but I can't show it until it arrives at its new home. I finished the "Words of Christmas" HOE ornament.

GIVEAWAY WINNER
If you've made it this far, you're probably wondering "Who's the winner?!?" I used the Random Number Generator thingy (so much easier than putting names in a hat!). The winner is Lynn in TX!

I don't know....3 years? I could go back and look I guess. I love the weekly updates, love your writing style, and especially loved the Boyfriend Chronicles....it's always an upper! Keep it going.

Congratulations, Lynn! Please email me with your address and I'll get the package out to you. Thanks for being a reader all these years! (P.S. I think it's been longer than 3 years, LoL)
