Stitching Bloggers Blog Hop: Thrift Stores

Long time readers know that I love-love-love discovering treasures at the thrift store. Over the years, I've scored lots of goodies!

As a stitcher, the thrift stores are my "go to" place for frames. Not only are they inexpensive, they are also more decorative than what I find in big box stores.  Click on the various links below to see how I repurposed items, or to just read more about them.

I found wonderful fabrics and quilting supplies.

Awesome Spice Carousels

Hump Day Happenings

How's your week going? Hump Day... Hopefully, it's all downhill from here.

TREASURE HUNTING
Sometimes... just sometimes... I feel like getting my 'thrift' on so I head to the nearest store to imbibe in treasure hunting. I always see things that I think are really cool. Or, things I could upscale and make something really cool. Believe it or not, I *do* walk out without buying anything even when seeing these cool things. Bummer, I know! I wasn't so good in my recent travels, however.

A kitted up quilt called "Night Light" by Villa Rosa Designs
Originally priced at $29.90

Aren't the fabrics adorable?

It came in this adorable felt froggy basket!
I picked up this kit for $2.99 -- Yep, that's right.  :)

I picked up this quilt kit, too.  It's a winter themed table runner
called Runner For the Borders.
Originally, it was $19.99 and I got it for 99cents!
For these prices, I couldn't pass either one up.

HEALTHY LIVING
Healthy living pays off... in more ways than one.  Obviously, a healthy lifestyle means less health problems.  That's the BIG plus!  I mentioned in a previous post that I participate in a healthy living program through work in order to get a discount on the health insurance.  Another plus!  In order to get the discount, we need to accumulate at least 5,000 points by participating in various healthy living activities—annual medical/dental/eye care visits, blood donation, exercise, biometric screenings, workshops, weight loss, blood pressure, etc.  There are a TON of things to accumulate points.  Plus #3!  Every point earned equals $1 that can be used in the online “mall”.  We can buy things such as movie tickets, iPads, Amazon gift cards, bicycles and accessories, fitness equipment, etc.  Plus #4!  At the end of each year, 10% of the points accumulated carryforward to count for the next year, and all of the mall dollars carryforward for 3 years.  Plus #5!  Wait… There’s even more  --- I know you’re sitting on the edge of your seat wondering ---  At the different point levels (bronze, silver, gold, platinum), names of every participant from all companies using the program are put into a Jackpot drawing for various prizes.  Plus #6!  I’m at the Platinum level (10,000 points).  I mentioned previously that my name was drawn for an iPad mini.  I’m a bit miffed that mine arrived two weeks after I ordered it and my coworker got hers 2 DAYS after she ordered hers.  I’m not really miffed, but I was like: “What the heck?!?”  I haven’t played with the iPad much, but did buy the Xstitch app that keeps inventory of floss and charts.  It also has a journal feature to track projects.

If your company has a healthy lifestyle program, I encourage you to try it.  The biometric screenings have alerted me to areas that I need to work on.   I’m not a fan of exercise, but I have to admit that having the program in place is a wonderful incentive to get out and give it a go.  Having a pedometer to track my steps has really helped me to keep on top of the 10,000 steps/day goal.  I now know how many steps it is to walk from various places in my house (LOL) as well as various places outside.  I participated in my first 3K last year!  The other incentives are great, too.

Marvelous Monday Update 1/11/2015

TREASURE HUNTING
The BF took me to the thrift store in search of yarn. Didn't find yarn, but did come across two Kitchen Art Spice Carousels.  Neither carousel looked like they had been used.  They retail for $20-24 each.  I had a 10% off coupon and ended up paying less than $5 for both of them!  Each one holds 12 spice containers and they rotate so you can find the spice you're looking for pretty easily.  I ended up filling 21 of the 24 spice containers... all different spices... even different than the 12 you see in the chrome and black carousel in the background.

There are three ways to get the spices out: There's two flip tops... a large one in front so you can use a measuring spoon and a smaller one in back with shaker holes. There's also a flip door on the bottom. See the knobs on the front? They can be turned and each click dispenses 1/4 tsp. of spice out the bottom door.

The funny thing is that I saw these a couple weeks ago at the thrift store.  At that time, they were separated and marked $4.99 each.  Someone must've thought they were supposed to be one unit and put them together.  They are stackable, but sold separately in stores.

See the little labels?  I made those with my Brother label maker.

COOKING
I've made different recipes in the crockpot over the years, but never lasagna. Until now.  The recipe is very similar to my no-cook lasagna oven recipe.

It was scrumptious!

I kept reading about how easy it is to make homemade tomato soup.  I finally decided to try it.  It definitely is easy and tastes good.  Plus, it doesn't contain all the additives and sodium in canned tomato soup.

STITCHY STUFF
I think I may have mentioned stitching on a Wizzer during my lunch hour at work.  It's about 2/3 done and I remembered to bring it home for a photo op.  I think this may be an OOP kit as I've not seen it online anywhere.

Melvin and His Pal

My plan was to get the cat stitched and at least the outline of the moon done over the weekend. However, it didn't happen.  Here's my latest progress:

Other progress photos can be seen HERE.

A few years ago, I created an online class to teach fellow stitchers how to make a needlebook.  The weekly lessons gave students a chance to ask questions as they created their projects.  After class was completed, I put the tutorial on my blog (see left sidebar).  Recently, Patricia, a stitcher from Facebook, contacted me and shared the needlebook she created using my tutorial.  With her permission, I'd like to share with you:

Isn't it adorable?
Kudos to Patricia for creating a beautiful needlebook!

Photos from the needlebook class can be seen HERE.

Marvelous Monday Update 11/24/14

WHERE DID AUTUMN GO?
Sadly, the nice autumn weather has been replaced by brutal cold winds and a bit of snow.  Here a bit of snow... Buffalo, NY now that's a whole other story!  Before the cold weather set in, I was going on daily walks during my lunch hour....

All those pretty colors have been replaced by leafless, stark trees and foliage.  :(

This guy was hanging out in a tree enjoying a snack!

GREEN THUMB
I can't remember if I've ever talked about my Mom's green thumb.  She LOVED plants... and when I say that, I mean LOVE...LOVE...LOVED them!  Ever since I can remember, she always had plants and flowers.  At one time, my parent's house had so many that you'd swear it was a greenhouse.

Much to my Dad's chagrin, to enable her us kids would buy her trees, plants, and bulbs for her to plant outside.  She loved them, so what was the harm, right?!

Mom's favorite plant was the Christmas Cactus.  Or Thanksgiving Cactus. Or Easter Cactus.  When she was living with me, she insisted we bring her large Christmas Cactus so she could see it.  Of course, we complied and I set it at the foot of her bed.  Every day, she'd tell me to open the shades of the window so it could get light.  She has had this cactus FOREVER and it's huge.  It's just starting to bud out right now and when it blooms, I'll share a photo.  Meantime, I have another one of her cactus that bloomed a few weeks ago:

Pink/Fushia/Burgundy were her favorite colors.  It's like a little piece of Mom is still with us through her plants.  I just hope I can keep them alive!  Incidentally, my brother is going to have that photo put on his arm as a tattoo tribute to Mom.

NEIGHBORS
As I said in my previous post, my neighbors are "in the process" of moving.  Going on three weeks now, they're still moving stuff!  They own the house and it's not been put up for sale so I imagine they're taking their sweet time.  They started to dismantle the dog kennels, but apparently got tired or something because they stopped after getting most of it moved.

That white stuff you see isn't snow.  It's dog hair!  For days, I wondered where all the large pieces of dog hair came from.... on my outdoor steps, in my hedges... everywhere!

This is their crap between our garages.  It's actually a lot better than it normally is.  They have stuff strewn all the way to the back as you can see and even shoved behind their garage.  Stuff that should be taken to a junk yard.

STITCHY STUFF
I've been putting stitches in on Balloon Glow during my lunch hour.  It goes pretty fast since most of the stitches are halfsies.

I've also started an ornament for an exchange I signed up for.  No pics, though.  Can't show until it gets to the recipient.  I will say that I must be insane to stitch it over-one on 28ct... 'nuf said.

SILHOUETTE PORTRAIT

Guess what arrived last Monday? The Silhouette Portrait I won on CraftGossip! It only took 2 weeks from notification to delivery.  I've been so busy finishing up the exchanges I'm in that I haven't even had time to take the Portrait out of the box. How sad is that? Hopefully, after next week I can play with it. Anyone have this or a Cameo that can share some tips/tricks? New toys.... gotta love 'em!

STASH FOR SALE
The other day, I innocently started looking through my stash.  Next thing I know, I was purging stuff I liked but knew I'd probably never get around to stitching.  I ended up with a huge pile.

My purging might be your gain!  I've listed all this stuff on my Stash For Sale Facebook page HERE.  All prices are in USD and I will ship internationally with a minimum $20 order.  I also have a bunch of stuff listed on my Stash For Sale blog HERE.

TREASURE HUNTING
Not my usual type of post for "treasures", but I was so proud of my shopping skills I had to share.  For a while now, I've been complaining about contemplating replacing my 15-year old Black & Decker iron.  The poor thing has been put through the paces over the years, including being knocked on the floor a time or two.  The teflon coated sole plate started peeling a couple years ago and last year, I peeled some of it off because it was annoyingly bothersome.

While out an about over the weekend, I looked at irons at JoAnn Fabrics and Shopko.  I looked at B&D's, Rowenta's, Shark's, as well as others.  I decided to go with the Shark Ultimate Professional Model GI505.  It was "on sale" for $54.99 with no rainchecks *gasp*....

I'm anal all about researching and contemplating products before buying.  Of course, I do my research online.  Lo and behold, I found the same iron for sale on Amazon for $49.99 plus free shipping with a no cost 30-day trial subscription to Amazon Prime -and- $30 credit if I applied for a Amazon Rewards Visa card.  I was all over it!

Final price for the iron:  $19.99!  Woo Hoo!!

Until Next Time,

Stupendous Saturday 10/25/14

Happy Saturday!

I woke up early... early as in it was still dark outside.  The sky was still filled with stars.  Beautiful stars.  I am looking foward to the day because I get to go shopping!  With everything going on since April, this shopping day will be like a mini vacation away from EVERYTHING:  housework, laundry, cleaning out my parents house, dealing with estate stuff.  I need time away... really, I do!  So, that's my plan and I'm sticking to it.  (Even if I feel a bit guilty with all the "work" that still needs to be done.)

Now that I've shared what my stupendous Saturday is going to be like, I can regale you with other things I've been up to:

TREASURE HUNTING
Not that I've had a lot of time lately to treasure hunt, but I've gotten lucky with a few lovely finds over the past few months.

Some of you may know that I love photography... just as much as stitching!  Love cameras, photographs, taking photographs, gadgets, and oh how I enjoy finding unique frames!  For years, I have wanted a digital photo frame.  I didn't want a cheapo one, but I couldn't justify paying a hefty price for a really nice one.  Look what I found for a mere $15:

I know, I know. It doesn't look very exciting right now but it will when I put photos in it!  It's an HP 8" digital photo frame in dark expresso.  It comes with a remote control, too.  It was still in the box in the original wrapping.  The funny thing is... It's been at the thrift store for weeks priced at $39.99.  When I saw it had been marked down to $14.99, I couldn't resist.  This frame sells on Amazon for $80.  So, so happy with my purchase!

Want to hear how anal indecisive I am with certain purchases?  Sure you do.  When I saw it in the thrift store, I thought: "Oh my god, I LOVE it!"  Then I saw the price tag... Did I really want to pay that much?  I made a bargain with myself.  "Self," I said, "if it's still there after you finishing shopping the rest of the store, then seriously consider it.  If it's meant to be, it will still be there when you get done shopping."  LOL, silly aren't I?  So, I did just that.  I continued to peruse the rest of the store... actually, I did go back and look at it at least three times.  Crazy, I know.  When I finished browsing, there it was and I brought it home.  What was it, you're wondering?

A beautiful (and I do mean beautiful!) oak jewelry armoire.  It is so similiar to my bedroom set, if one didn't know better they'd think it came as a set.  The photo really doesn't do it justice.

I consider it a piece of furniture as it stands 39" tall.  It's a well built armoire compared to smaller ones I've seen in stores.  My guess is that it cost around $300 when it was new.  I feel I got it for a steal at $65.  My only dilemma is that I don't want to get rid of my smaller jewelry boxes.  One my parents gave to me for Christmas when I was a teenager, and the other two I've had forever.  *sigh*  Believe it or not, I have contemplated using it as a floss cabinet.  It'd be perfect for that!

I did a slight modification in that I put felt under the legs so that it wouldn't scratch my hardwood floors.  The BF tightened up the screws for the legs and the piano hinge that allows the mirrored top to be opened.

After the above finds, this one pales in comparison.  Even though I'm much more particular about thrift store stash acquisitions, I still can't resist a good floss deal.  For less than $1, I got this:

I think I'm good for DMC 816 for a while, don't you?

My next "find" isn't as exciting as the previous ones, but a great find nonetheless.  Both my brother and BF have this.  They say it's awesome for keeping shoes, boots, and gloves dry.  Retailing for $40, I picked up a new-in-the-box Peet Boot Dryer for less than $5.  Score!  It's quiet and will come in handy.

STITCHY STUFF
I haven't gotten around to stitching the buttons on Heart of America yet, but I have been steadily plugging away at Midnight Watch.  I've made quite a few substitutions because I didn't have all the GAST and WDW the chart called for.  Plus, I didn't particularly care for some of the colors in the design either.  Mix it up, I did!

Since the above photo was taken, I've done quite a bit more.  I guess I should put out a new photo:

THOUGHTFULNESS
I continue to receive condolence cards and I must say that you stitchers have brought tears to my eyes with your thoughtful and caring words of comfort.  My heartstrings have definitely been pulled as I read the cards. Some of you I have met in real life and others only online, but I tell you what -- You guys (gals) are wonderful!  Thank you with all my heart for your kindness.

Yesterday, I was surprised to see a package sticking out of my mailbox.  I scanned my brain quickly, but I couldn't remember ordering anything.

Inside the box was a prayer shawl crocheted by Berly in Missouri.  She and I have "known" each other online for at least seven years.  We met in real life a couple years ago at a retreat.  I can't tell you how touched I was to receive such a gift and condolence card.  Thank you so much, Berly.  I have already showed it to a couple of my siblings. :)

I think that about does it for now.

Until next time,

Where Does One Start?

Ever have trouble getting a blog update started?  It's not like I don't have things to say.  I just don't know where to start.  The past couple days have been difficult (more on that later).  I guess I'll start with a bit of humor...

TREASURE HUNTING
Last night, I went to the thrift store to see if I could find a purse and a belt.  The belt I've been using literally fell apart one day last week.  I did find a belt.  No purse, though.  Also picked up a couple of books for $0.99 each and a nice 11x14 ornate frame with a mat in it.  I figure I can use it for a future stitching project.  I don't know what it is with me and frames (must be the photographer in me).  It's either frames or office supplies.  Yes, I have a fetish for office supplies, lol.  Note pads, post-its, paperclips, pens, markers, pencils, etc.  You're probably wondering what it is I found amusing at the thrift store, right?  I can hear you, "Get on with it, lady!"

I spied a still-in-the-package bottle of Fray Check.  I use the stuff for sealing the edges of my fabric to keep it from fraying while I stitch.  Sometimes, if I'm not too lazy... I'll use the sewing machine, but fray check is easier.  So, I saw the bottle and picked it up.  And yes, I thought this was funny.  Not "Ha Ha" funny, but stupid funny like "Seriously?"

New Price:  $2.59

Thrift Store Price: $2.99

As hard as it was (she says sarcastically), I opted to leave the fray check on the shelf.  I can get the stuff for 40% off with coupon at JoAnn Fabrics.  Now that's a deal!

WEATHER
Last week started out with snow on Monday.  Can you believe it?  Snow!  This has been the longest winter ever.  Even though it snowed all day, we only ended up with a dusting of accumulation.

These were taken during my commute to work.  Despite the 40 minutes it takes, it is a beautiful drive (now that the "Tunnels of Terror" have disappeared).  This weekend, temperatures are supposed to get to the upper 60's with beautiful sunshine.  Yay!

STITCHY STUFF
After my last Petal Pincushion update, I realized I didn't cut the fabric correctly for four of the panels.  I based my size on the size of the chart and added an inch.  Makes sense, right?  However, that is incorrect.  There are three different charts for the project.  One for the button, one for the inside panels (which is the correct size) and one for outside panels.  Apparently, one is supposed to assume that the fabric for the outside panels would be the same as for the inside panels despite the chart dimensions being different.  This girl did not assume and cut the fabric according to the chart sizes.  Christina from A Stitchers Work and I are doing this as a SAL and are sharing photos.  After seeing her initial WIP photos, it occurred to me that my outside panels didn't look quite right.  Wouldn't you know, those are the panels I stitched first.  I had two done before I realized the error of my ways.  I've cut new pieces of fabric.  Thank goodness I have a huge piece of it!

The light half circle line isn't actually on the fabric pieces.  It's a reflection of sunlight from the camera lens.  Oddest thing... In all the years I've been doing photography, I've never had it happen before.

I thought I'd pull together the finishing supplies I found in my stash that'll be used to create the pincushion.  I forgot to include the 1/8" satin ribbon... it's the same dark purple as the stitched flowers.

See the cost of the button covers?  29cents!  I don't even remember where I got them, but I've had them forever.  I estimate they're probably from the 1960's or 70's.

The pincushion project is basically a mattress pincushion inside a pyramid box made from the stitched pieces.  I've been kicking around which fabric I should use for the mattress and bottom of the pyramind.  Pink or Purple?  I dug through my stash and came up with these purple choices:

I'm kinda leaning toward the upper left fabric, but I don't know if it's too "busy".  The bottom one looks too light and the dark purple in the upper right looks too dark.  What do you think?

I am really happy with the third panel I'm stitching on.  Believe it or not, I've used three different dye lots of DMC 704 (green) to stitch it.  I had small amounts of each on different bobbins and wanted to use them up.  So I blended two strands together and alternated with dye lots I stitched with.

Can't tell, can you?

I received word earlier this week that Anne of Doll's Musings received the Easter/Spring mailart I created for her.

The designs came from two different sources:
"Happy Easter" lettering - Cottage Garden Samplings
Duck, bunnies, and basket - Cross Stitch Crazy, Issue 109 (March 2008)
Fabric:  18ct Hand-dyed Aida (purple, turquoise, yellow)
Floss: DMC
Embellishments: 1/8" purple ribbon, buttons, seed bead

Anne loves the little details I add to my mailart and said it was "darling". I'm glad she liked it.  She wants to learn how to add the border fabric and suggested I do a tutorial.  So, when I do my next mailart, I will do a tutorial.  Meantime, I do have my "plain" mailart tutorial on the sidebar to the left.

I haven't done much on Japanese Garden, but I do have an update.  I think when I last left off, I said that I will run out of the green Eterna silk floss.  In looking at a conversion chart, I found that DMC 369 is a very-very close match.  So, I ripped out some of the silk floss I'd stitched in the corner ornament.  I did this very carefully as I wanted to save and reuse as much as possible.  I re-stitched a section blending one strand of silk with one strand of DMC.  One strand of silk is just enough to give it the sheen the rest of the project has.  I showed the BF and he couldn't tell a difference.  So, I ripped out the rest of the silk thread and restitched it.  I'm hoping I haven enough silk to finish the other corner.  It will be close, that's for sure!

FAMILY
On April 7th, my Dad asked me if I could drive him to the VA hospital because he was scheduled for a biopsy.  The nearest VA hospital is about an hour and a half from my parents and two hours for me.  Two months ago, he found a lump.  They did a needle biopsy which didn't tell anything.  The lump grew to almost twice the size so they scheduled a biopsy.

Fast forward to two days ago.  My youngest brother called me to tell me he'd visited my parents the day before and found out the results.  I think my Mom said something because Dad wasn't going to tell anyone until after next Monday.  My Dad has cancer.  Cancer!  I asked what kind, and he said they don't know.  How can they not know?  How do they form a treatment plan if they don't know?

On Monday, there is a consultation with the surgeon and radiologist.  I am going with my parents because they never ask questions about anything and sometimes I think they don't understand what doctors tell them.  They just go along with whatever the doctors say.  I try not to think of the ramifications... of course, I don't always succeed.  The last few days have been difficult, to say the least.

I had a massage therapy appointment this morning and the therapist said, "This is going to be a stupid question, but are you having a lot of stress at work?"  Then, she proceeded to tell me that both my shoulders were really, really tight.  I said, "Not at work, but I've been under stress the past few days."  Apparently, I'm carrying the stress in my shoulders.  Rather than cancel my appointment in two weeks, I decided to keep it seeing as I've been internalizing what's been going on.

If you're interested, you can read a little about my Dad HERE.

HOLIDAY
I don't want to sign off on a downer, so I want to wish everyone who celebrates... a Happy Easter.

I won't be doing anything special.  I brought work home so I can make up the hours I'll miss on Monday.  While putting some things in the attic last month, I came across my only Easter decorations.  It's been over a decade since I set these out.  If you look close, you can see that the tree lights up.

Until next time,
