What Is This 3/23/09 - The Answer

I've had this item for about 4 years. Every year, I take pleasure in bringing it back to life during the cold winter months and watching it bring a little "spring" into the cold, gray days.

What Is It?

AMARYLLIS!

Out of all the guesses, only 3 people were correct. I put the names in a bowl and drew a name. This winning guess was from....

Mary, please send me your snail mail address and I'll get a little stitchy something out to you! Thanks to everyone for playing :)

Marvelous Monday 3/23/09

Monday is half over, and I know you all are wondering "Where IS Meari's Marvelous Monday post?!" LOL, OK maybe not... I'm late in getting this out, so here goes:

Two Awards!
Sadie of UK gave me two awards:

Brilliante Award

Special Friends Award

I've been awarded and given both these awards so I'm going to defer to those posts HERE and HERE. Thank you, Sadie! I was really amused by your comments about "Cute Lube Guy" LOL!

Spring is Officially Here!
The long awaited event has finally happened. Spring officially arrived last Friday. Signs of it are all over the place. Squirrels are frolicking... which my sister will be *thrilled* to know. (Can you say squirrel phobia??) LOL Flowers and greenery are popping up everywhere, and temps are getting warmer. In addition, sneezing, sniffling, and itchy nose has plagued me this past week. Ahhhh, the wonders and joys of spring!

The weather was really nice this weekend so I managed to get the rest of the leaves raked, flower beds cleaned up, -and- I created two portable clothes lines to hang laundry out. I am so excited about it because I LOVE laundry dried in the fresh air! I even got to hang a load out. :)

Stitchy Stuff
In addition to finishing the mail art piece in the previous blog entry, I spent a few hours stitching on Quakers Rule. Here's what it looks like after 14.25 hours:

I spent a good amount of time going through charts and kits, and have uploaded a bunch to my Stash for Sale blog.

Last but not least, the winner of last weeks drawing for the alphabet charts is....

Valerie, the Fogcity Dweller!

Please email me with your snail mail addy and I'll get these out to you this week.

Giveaway
This time it's not from me, but Ginny over at Ginny's Quilts. It's her birthday this week and she has a fabulous giveaway on her blog, if you're into quilting/sewing.

What IS this?
I haven't done one of these in a while, so I thought it'd be fun. If you think you know, put a comment on this post. The winner will receive something from my stash pile. I can't tell you what because I haven't figured that part out yet! If more than one person guesses the right answer, I'll put the names in a "hat" and draw one.

Oh, and no generic answers either! For instance, if you think it's a dog I don't want "dog" as an answer. You have to tell me what kind of dog! Toughie, eh?

What Is This 4/12/08 Answer

The winner this round is.....
Glenda!

She guessed correctly that it was a toilet paper holder.

Who'da thought I'd be writing about toilet paper? Not toilet paper per se, but the holder itself. If I had my choice, I'd go and buy any of the fantastic easily mounted-on-the wall type of holders. However, with my bathroom walls covered in porcelain tile, my choices are limited.

The TP holder that came with the house is a plain Jane chrome recessed one. I swear I've spent hours searching online for a recessed toilet paper holder. One wouldn't think it'd be such a difficult task. I'm here to tell you VERY FEW places sell recessed TP holders, let alone ones that are decorative in nature.

A few weeks ago, I found an antique brass one at an Ace Hardware store about 40 minutes from my house, so I picked one up when I took my niece shopping. When I got it home and looked at it in the bathroom, I found that it was too dark so I ended up taking it back last weekend.

Several months ago, I read about Habitat for Humanity ReStores. They're retail outlets for gently used building materials and home appliances. The store I went to wasn't very big, but I was surprised at some of the things they had. Imagine my surprise when I saw that they had not one, but 4-5 recessed TP holders. Some were still in the packaging. I left the store without anything because the one I liked wasn't the right color.

Half a block away, a light bulb went on in my head... I could paint it to match the mirror I refinished last month! For $2, I got this:

Not only did I support Habitat for Humanity, I reduced waste and use of resources by purchasing something second-hand. I also saved myself about $16, if not more. Since the piece that actually holds the TP is plastic, I'm going to switch it out with the metal one on my other holder.

The metal border was a bit corroded. So I set to work... First, I disassembled and cleaned everything. I primered and painted everything. The decorative border looked great!

Then.....

Like a dummy, I used the power drill to try and screw the plastic piece back on to the border. Just a TAD too strong because the entire thing flipped out of my hands and hit the kitchen floor. I imagine there was a mixture of horror and outright disbelief at what laid in PIECES. Yup, the plastic part shattered!

So much for my matching TP holder. I'm hoping one day to find another plastic part, or an entire holder like it that isn't too expensive.

Congratulations to Glenda in MT for guessing correctly!

What Is This 3/20/08 Answer

Rub-a-dub-dub
Three men in a tub...

I had a dilemma with the answers on the 3/20 What Is This contest. Several people had guesses that could've been right, but only a few named it for what it was. So I decided to put those names in a hat and choose a winner.

As I aimlessly wandered around the new SuperWalmart a few weeks ago, I came upon it. The answer to all my prayers! LOL, maybe not THE answer, but it sounded good, didn't it? I found a SOAP SAVER.

It's like a shower puff, but it opens up and you can put a full bar of soap, or lots of soap slivers in it. It lathers up really well, too! The only complaint I have about it is the little plastic closure thingy doesn't grip very well and sometimes soap falls out. I know I have better ones in my stash... if I EVER get it unpacked!

I'd been saving soap slivers for years, reusing them in various ways. Once I made liquid soap out of them. I'd thought about making shavings out of them and then melting it into a new bar of soap. With a soap saver, I can just shove those little pieces in there are use it at bath/shower time! For less than $2, re-use can get any easier. Can you tell I'm big on re-using, recycling, and reducing waste?

And now for the winner...

*drum roll*

What Is This? 9/7/07 Answer

Anyone a fan of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs? The wicked stepmother said, "Mirror Mirror on the wall..."

Yes, that was a pic of a mirror I had hanging near the entryway of my dining room. What's the story of the mirror? I found it in the clearance section of Hobby Lobby several years ago. It was a battered, rather unattractive looking pale yellow piece of work. The mail/calendar rack you see next to the mirror... It was a bright colbalt blue color.

I took a trot on down to the local Menards where I found a rainbow of spray paint cans in a menagerie of textures. I picked out a gray granite and set about creating my new works of art. The end result was two matching pieces that fit well into my decor. Years later, I still like what I did!

What Is This?

Since it was so much fun last time, I thought I'd do an installment of "What Is This?" from time to time.

Here are the "rules":

In addition to your guess, you have to make up a little background story to go with your answer.
The answer has to be specific. For instance, "clothing" is too generic. You have to say what *kind* of clothing. Saying "Clothing I that was found at Walmart" is too generic for the story. Think: Who, What, Where, When, Why, How. Of course, we all know this is not clothing!!

Use your imagination!

The winner will receive a little sumthin-sumthin from my stash, so be sure to leave your email address! If there's more than one with the correct answer, names will be put into a hat and one winner will be drawn.

To qualify, you have to leave your answer, and the story that goes along with it in a comment on this blog. If you don't have a blogger account, you can sign in under "Anonymous"... just remember to sign your name so I know who you are. :) Contest ends September 15th.

Good luck!

What Is This? 8/18/07 Answer

A couple weeks ago, I put out a "What Is This?" challenge.

It's my lawnmower! A couple years ago, I needed a lawnmower and Freecycle came to my rescue! Actually, the freecycler had two mowers, neither of them worked. However, my Dad used to be a small engine mechanic and for about $2 he got this one running for me. It's worked great since then! Not bad for an 18yr mower, eh??

Have I said how much I like Freecycle?!?

Now for the really fun part. I really enjoyed the "creative" stories I received in response to the challenge! Thank you ladies. :) As promised, I put all the names of those with the correct answer in a "hat" for a prize from my stash.

The winner is....

*drum roll*

Anita Sorrells!!
