Day 6 Post Op

I am hungry! Broths and applesauce just aren't cutting it as far as my tummy is concerned. I've had a couple bowls of ice cream and 1 1/2 popcicles. Popcicles just don't taste good for some reason. It hurts to eat or swallow. Stuff at room temp seems to go down the best.

I was pretty much out of it the first day after surgery. I couldn't sleep for more than an hour at a time, and had major sinus drainage (TMI?). I'm on a liquid pain killer that contains vicodin. IMO, it just takes the edge off and it makes me sleepy. The past few days I've been trying not to take it until I can't stand the pain anymore.

One can only watch so many talk shows in a day! Thank goodness for the net, and my stitching groups. I just want to thank all of you again for checking on me with private emails, and for your comments in the past week.

I did manage to finish the stitching on two ornaments last night. Just have to make them "into" ornies. The only reason I managed to do that is I didn't take the pain meds. If I take them, I'm worthless. I know I should be kicking back and just recovering, but I feel so lazy! Especially when I look around and see all these boxes that need unpacking... But I'm not unpacking anything since I'm not supposed to be lifting.

I read some adult tonsilectomy "horror" stories online yesterday. Boy, am I glad I didn't read those before surgery. All of them said it was rough. Great.... During days 7-10, the pain is supposed to get worse because the scabs will fall off at that time. Another thing I have to look forward to.

I haven't slept in my bed since surgery since I haven't been able to sleep laying down. Plus with waking up every couple hours, it's just easier to sleep on the sofa with the computer, tv, drinks, etc right there.

My employer sent me a HUGE beautiful bouquet of flowers the day after my surgery. I'm able to check my work email from home, and my coworkers have been emailing me every couple of days asking how I am doing. :) My sister text messages me... She tried calling but since i can't talk, texting is best right now.

Overall, life sucks for me right now... LOL, but hey I'll bounce back. I always do.

Glad to see you back Meari. Hope you recover quickly. My advice is to take the pain meds or maybe see if there's something milder you can take. You don't want it to get really bad and then see that what you have won't take the edge off. It can happen :-( Try to take it easy!!

I'm so glad to hear from you again. I hope the sinus drainage is a GOOD thing. Even if this surgery doesn't fix everything, at least you have two less things to go wrong. Just rest. I know there are boxes. There are boxes here, too, but believe me I can stare at them for a couple more weeks if I am not feeling well. REST!

No need to talk when you have the internet!

Meari:

Glad to see you posting. In a few weeks all this recovery stuff will be a distant memory. I haven't had my tonsils out, but I've had a bunch of different surgeries over the years, so unfortunately, speak from lots of experience.

Take care and feel better soon!

Praying that you will feel better soon! I'm so sorry that you had to do this surgery alone.

Meari,
Take care of yourself! Do not overdo it because that will make it take longer to recover most likely! Rest and enjoy your mini-vacation. Plenty of time to unpack, later! Just think....you have an excuse not to do anything! Enjoy! Hope you're feeling better, soon! Love, Robin

Aww I am so sorry Meari. I have to go get a tonsilectomy too but I want to get it done in the states so my family can help with the kids during my recovery time. Take your pain killers and relax, its your turn to be lazy for a bit so you can recover. :)

I had my tonsils removed when I was 21 and the day of the surgery wasn't so bad, but the few days afterwards were really bad. I found that drinking a lot of cool (not cold), non-fizzy, non-acidic (no cranberry juice) drinks helped tremendously, as did the ice collar the hospital gave me.

Best wishes for a speedy recovery.

Meari, I've not been keeping up reading blogs (bad me *lol*) ... I'm glad to read you're on the road to recovery from your surgery (positive thoughts, right?) and sorry to read of your problems with S. I hope everything sorts itself out soon & that you feel tremendously better very fast.

Glad the surgery went well, but sorry the recovery isn't quite what you'd like. Hope you'll be back on your feet soon!

Glad to hear you are hanging in there!! My DD is on day 2 post op for the same surgery (plus adenoids) She is having alot of trouble eating but her pain isn't too bad as long as she gets her meds on schedule. I think this surgery is a little easier on children. Take care of yourself. I wish you a speedy recovery!

Hope you continue to feel better! As for the horror stories...a good rule of thumb is to NEVER look up medical stuff on the Internet for you, your spouse, your kids, your family members, or your pets. You will end up freaking yourself out! :-) I've scared myself silly over nothing, so I just don't look it up anymore.

Dear Meari, I'm so glad you posted. I've been so worried about you. I knew it was going to be a KILLER surgery, but I was afraid to tell you! My son had his tonsils out when he was in his mid-twenties, and it was soooo painful. Please know that somebody understands and can sympathize with how terrible you feel. I'm so sorry. And, I'm glad you're finding whatever comfort you can right now. There is a certain medication "lollipop" they call it down here, that the drs. give (it's to help cancer patients who've had radiation near the throat anesthesize the pain) to kill the pain long enough so you can eat and drink. I believe it has lidocane in it. It comes in a liquid perscription. Ask for it, Meari!!!
Sending love and hugs,
Deb

It's always hard to have a surgery as an adult. I don't think it's a good idea to check those kind of things on the internet (especially because it's often the people who had problems who post !!!) Soon you will feel better and it will be all behind you ;)

Take care

(((((((hugs)))))))))

Hoping for you to have a speedy recovery! I had mine out when I was 16, I lost 7 lbs in 3 days. You'll be ok, and atleast you have the internet and your stitching!

Oh Meari it sounds awful but it will get better. Try some cream soups, just luke warm they have a little more substance and will be better for you than all the sugar. Don't fight the pain medicine they give it to you for a reason. Just sleep, the more hours you do the more hours your body has to heal. Check back with us when you can. Take care

Hi Meari! Glad you're doing ok. Don't worry a bit about all those ol' boxes everywhere! They'll still be there when you're feeling better! For now, just concentrate on healing up! hugs... Pam K. :o)

Oh no, I'm so sorry to hear that you are feeling so rotton. I'm so far behind reading blogs I didn't realize you'd had surgery. I had my tonsels out when I was young, and it wasn't pleasent then, I can't imagine having it as an adult. I sure hope the pain eases soon and that you can start feeling better. {{hugs}}

Glad your surgery went well and you're well on your way back to normal. I have no idea of what you have gone through, since I still have my tonsils at age 60 (& hope to keep them - :D).
