Am I Girly Girl?

You Are 28% Girly

You are a pretty hardcore tomboy, and a very free spirit.

Gender roles be dammed, you like to do things your way.

What can I say? I grew up tomboy. I had to "learn" how to be girly, and if I do say so myself... I clean up nice!

The Movies of Our Lives

Am I movie geek? Do I have a life? I swiped this from The Stitching Hour...

Less than 41%.

And I've seen a bunch of movies more moviesthat aren't on this list. Also, if the list had more Disney movies (animated and non-animated, current and "old"), I could have pushed my total a whole lot higher. I'd like to think of myself as a movie buff, rather than having no life. LOL

Did Someone Call The Fire Dept?

We had some pretty big excitement in our city today. The entire downtown area was blocked off since early this morning. I work downtown and my office smelled of smoke all day! Here's what was in the news as of 3:30pm:

A fire at 219 W. Main Street that started at 7 a.m. this morning has spread to an adjacent building at 223 W. Main Street, said Fire Chief Friday afternoon.

Traffic was still being redirected and firefighters continued to douse the structure downtown at 2:30 p.m. The local department had several trucks at the scene and was using a water cannon fixed to the top of a ladder truck to keep the blaze under control, with a steady stream of water pouring onto the roof of the building.

Fire Chief reported no one was injured in the major downtown fire that colored the city skyline with billows of brown smoke Friday at 7 a.m.

Chief said firefighters entered the building and were immediately pushed back by intense fire, setting up a defensive position outside of the structure at 219 W. Main Street, known as Cheaters tavern. Police cordoned off the area, re-routed traffic and roped off the sidewalk from interested onlookers.

Some 30 firefighters responded to the call, setting up a large ladder truck and pouring water onto the roof of the building.

No one was in the building at the time the fire started, according to Deputy Fire Chief, but one person in the building next door was evacuated. When they arrived firefighters were already battling a backdraft in the rear of the building. And, two firefighters barely made it out the first floor entrance before for the building's stairwell and ceiling collapsed.

Fire Investigator was called to the scene, however an official determination of what started the blaze has not been determined.By 10 a.m., the fire was under control, and a large ladder truck was pouring water onto the roof of a smoldering structure.

"We can't get at the part that's still burning, it's under the roof, so we're keeping it wet," Chief said.

Neighboring buildings, Leroy's skate shop at 217 W. Main and Preferred Real Estate at 223 W. Main, were not directly involved in the blaze but may have sustained smoke and water damage.

Red Cross representatives were on hand by mid-morning, handing out donuts and coffee to morning weary firefighters.

SBQ - Fabric Count

Today's SBQ was suggested by Kathryn and is:What is the smallest count fabric you have ever used? Did you stitchover one? Conversely, what is the largest count fabric you have ever used?

The smallest count I've used is 32ct. I'm stitching Japanese Garden on it over-two. The smallest over-one I've stitched was 28ct. It was a Santa ornament I did in 2006. The largest count I've used so far is 14ct.

Monday Update 2/19/07

Stitching
I’ve made my mind up to finish Mime by Candamar Designs. It’s a 15+ year old UFO that my brother bought me when I started getting serious about stitching. It really wasn’t my style of stitching back then, or now but I’m going to finish it and add it to my “wall of stitching”.

School
I took my second test in my meteorology and got a 90, which was really good considering the class average was 73%. I think I’m getting into a “schedule” as far as getting my reading and assignments done.

Family
Yet another family member has made a trip to the ER. On Friday, my sister was admitted with what we thought was a heart attack. The ER doc finally determined that he thought it was chronic gall bladder disease, and was to be scheduled for surgery this week. After talking to the surgeon, he’s sending her to another specialist to have some sort of upper GI test to determine if in fact it is her gall bladder that’s causing all the pain. Three immediate family members have been in the ER since Christmas! Who’s next?

I spent Friday and Saturday with my niece, since my sister wasn’t feeling the greatest. We had a good time shopping and watching movies. Hard to believe she’s going to be getting her driver’s permit in a few months! It seems like yesterday I was going to the hospital to see her for the first time.

Men
Is it normal for a 42year old man who’s never been married to refer to his mother as “mommy”? Twice now in emails to me, this man has done this… and quite honestly it weirds me out. He was supposed to call me last week and two days later he emailed to ask me when he would call. His response as to why he didn’t call was “Distractions.” And something about his “mommy”. Now, today I get an apology email that ended in “I guess I blew it with you.” Yikes... For inquiring minds... I haven’t gone on any dates with this guy.

S wanted to do a day date... spend an entire day together, so I racked my brain to come up with activities we could do together for a good part of Saturday. Winter really is not a good time for dating! We ended up going to the historical museum (which he really liked!), the art museum, and bowling… where I found out that he is pretty competitive! I also found out that he compares me to his ex-wife. He’s only been divorced 8 months. I’m not sure how I should feel about being compared to the ex. I guess the good thing is that he says I’m nothing like his ex. My 15yr old niece text messaged me on Sunday: "Has he asked you to be his girlfriend yet?" LOL, isn't she funny?

Had a dinner date on Sun with T. It was a nice time. I can tell he’s ‘sizing’ me up by the observations and comments he makes.

Interestingly enough, I find it interesting how both men emailed/text messaged me after the date to tell me how nice I looked... and to ask me if I was interested in another date. Could it be they’re afraid of being rejected? It's very weird for me to be dating more than one person at a time - I've never done it before now. Everyone tells me it's good to keep my options open, and until things get serious not to worry about it.

Cough Cough
By the end of the day Friday, I had a little cough. I thought it was my asthma acting up since I’d been in and out of the cold air all day. On Saturday, I woke up with chest congestion. By Sunday, I had the rumbling congested cough. Didn’t sleep well at all. This morning I woke up with swollen glands and feel pretty yucky, but not yucky enough to stay home from work.

Threatre
I went to a play called the "Odd Couple" on Saturday night. It's based on the TV show. The playhouse was packed. Two rows in front of me were a bunch from the red hat society. The play was really funny!

Farkleberry Five

I snagged this from Michelle’s blog and it’s five things about me you may not know:

FARKLEBERRY FIVE

1. I am the oldest of four children. Being the oldest comes with responsibilities, you know. Every time one of the younger ones got in trouble or got hurt, my Dad blamed me because “You’re the oldest. You should know better!” If I only had a dollar...

2. When I still lived at home, I always shared a room with my sister. Being three years apart in age, she was the pesky little sister, and on top of it she was a tattle–tale. I use to have re-occurring nightmares. I’d wake her up and she’d listen to me tell stories or play word games with me until I was ready to go back to sleep.

3. I am not the most graceful person in the world. Ever since I can remember, I’ve been called clumsy. If there’s a doorway, I often misjudge the distance and end up bumping into it. That also goes for chairs, tables, bedposts! I can’t tell you how many times I’ve fallen down the stairs, up the stairs, and tripped in the yard.

4. I was a member of the National Honor Society when I was in high school, and am a member of Phi Theta Kappa, National Honor Society for 2yr colleges.

5. I am afraid of heights. I can’t walk up a set of bleachers (the kind you can see through to the ground) without becoming nervous after about four levels. I never sit at the top! Being in a plane or at the top of tall building doesn’t bother me. Go figure!

What Time of Day Am I?

You Are Sunrise

You enjoy living a slow, fulfilling life. You enjoy living every moment, no matter how ordinary.
You are a person of reflection and meditation. You start and end every day by looking inward.
Caring and giving, you enjoy making people happy. You're often cooking for friends or buying them gifts.
All in all, you know how to love life for what it is - not for how it should be.

15. You get up in the morning and go online before getting your coffee.

16. You start tilting your head sideways to smile.

17. You're reading this and nodding and laughing.

18. Even worse, you know exactly to whom you are going to forward this message.

19. You are too busy to notice there was no #9 on this list.

20. You actually scrolled back up to check that there wasn't a #9 on this list. and now you're laughing at yourself. (I did!)

Flowers for Me???!

I was in shock when I went back to the office after lunch today... Sitting on my desk wrapped all in plastic (to protect from the elements) was a vase of white roses! From S... who I've only been on two dates with! Aren't they beautiful?

A friend of mine asked me if it was OK to 'advertise' the fact that I got roses... since they were sent to my office after all. She is going to tell her BF of almost a year (who has never, and never will buy her flowers) that I got roses from a guy I've only dated twice. Her BF is a piece of work!

Bite 'O Winter

Old Man Winter has decided to share the wealth. Over the past couple days, we've gotten about 10" of snow! Today with all the blowing and drifting snow, most schools and lots of businesses were closed. Prior to this, we've been suffering through subzero temperatures, with windchill factors that took us into 20-30 below zero. The roads are messy, sloshy, and nasty. Tomorrow, we get to pretend we're ice skating with cars since temps tonight will be in the lower single digits. Here's some pics I took tonight:

Early spring? Sorry Phil, I think not!

I've Made It!

Project Challenge is complete!!! Woo Hoo! Here's a scissor fob I created for Mo in the UK. I finished it on 2/2/07, but didn't want to show it until she got the package. She finally received it today... and I'm glad she likes it! *whew* It's stitched on 14ct Fiddler's Cloth aida. The front is a motif from Prairie Schooler Book 17 "Woodland Sampler". The back came from Cross Country Stitching Alphabets Special Issue 1999. I changed all the colors to coordinate, using Six Strand Sweets floss. The cording is handmade from DMC floss.

Here's the breakdown of the projects I completed for the challenge:

1. Therapy Bookmark
2. Cardinal Snowflake Ornament
3. Freedom
4. Yummy Gingerbread Man Ornament
5. Santa Ornament
6. Gingerbread House Ornament
7. Ascot Albert Ornament
8. Winnie the Pooh Bookmark "Let's Bee Friends"
9. Brass Hummingbird Bookmark
10. Scissor Fob

Here's the fob Mo made for me. It's called "In My Garden" by Shepherd's Bush. Turned out lovely, didn't it?

What a Nice RAK!

Friday, I went to the post office to get my mail. In my box was the neon green paper that only means one thing. I have a package that's too big to fit into that 5x5" square hole that holds my mail. I think to myself... What did I order? I didn't order anything. I wonder what could it be? Another box of baby formula? (Yeah, I don't have kids... yet I get baby formula!) So I stand in line and wait my turn... The guys at the PO know me from being in there enough, they don't even ask which box is mine anymore. LOL! They see me waving the neon slip and off they go!

He came back with a big white envelope. I rushed home so I could see what was in it. What was in it? What was in it? You ask...

Gayle in MI sent me a Dimensions Gold Collection petite kit called Elegant Geisha. I love oriental themes! She also sent a 20x24 piece of monoco evenweave and Christmas Fobs by Heart in Hand. Thank you Gayle!

Friday Feast 2/9/07

Appetizer
Have you been sick yet this winter? If so, what did you come down with?

*knock on wood* No, I haven’t been sick yet this winter. After I’d been with my niece one weekend, I received a call a couple days later that she was diagnosed with strep throat. I called my Dr. asap to see if I could get antibiotics since my niece used my inhaler and then I used it. I also called D to tell him he might want to consider giving his Dr. a call. He said he’d take his chances… Well guess what? He got strep!

Soup
What colors dominate your closet?

I have the basic colors… Black, red, white. There’s some others, but mostly those three.

Salad
How would you describe your “comfort zone”?

I’m a planner and a list maker. I don’t like to be pushed to do things until I’m ready. Being forced into situations takes me out of my comfort zone.

Main Course
On which reality show would you really like to be a contestant?

I don’t need to be on a reality show. My life has had enough drama in it without my adding a reality show.

Dessert
Which holiday would you consider to be your favorite?

Probably Christmas because the entire family gets together. Of course, the decorations and presents are nice too.

You Wrecked My Truck, Didn't You?!

To My Darling Husband,

Before you return from your overseas trip I just want to let you know about the small accident I had with the pick up truck when I turned into the driveway. Fortunately not too bad and I really didn't get hurt, so please don't worry too much about me.

I was coming home from Wal-Mart, and when I turned into the driveway I accidentally pushed down on the accelerator instead of the brake. The garage door is slightly bent but the pick up fortunately came to a halt when it bumped into your car.

I am really sorry, but I know with your kind-hearted personality you will forgive me.

You know how much I love you and care for you my sweetheart.

I am enclosing a picture for you.

I cannot wait to hold you in my arms again.

Your loving wife.
XXX
P.S. Your girlfriend called.

You just don't KNOW how funny I think this is! You see, my ex had a truck EXACTLY like the one in the photograph. Shortly after we got it, I hit some black ice... did a 180... and ended up in the ditch on the wrong side of the road... taking out a barbed wire fence. I came to a skidding halt within 2 feet of a concrete culvert. The truck was fine except for a slight scratch on the driver's side door. When I called my ex, he was more worried about the d*mn truck than me. Never asked how I was... Just went on a tirade and screamed about how I wrecked his truck! I can still hear him screaming at me: "You wrecked my truck, didn't you?! You wrecked my truck!"... over and over and over again. You should've seen the look on the woman's face who stopped to help me... She could hear him screaming about his precious. (Too bad I didn't know about his girlfriend then.)

Thunder Nationals 2007

As promised, here are some photos of the action at the Monster Truck Thunder Nationals. The first one is of my nephew. Isn't he the cutest thing?

Terrific Thursday 2/8/07

What a great day!!

On Monday, I had my first quiz in my Meteorology class. Scores came out today. I got an A, 100%! We received an email from the instructor that the average class score was 93%. Needless to say, I am thrilled with how well I did. Especially since there were 3 questions I was really iffy about. Obviously I picked the right answers!!

Last night, my brother got out of the hospital. I thought I'd be a good sister and bring him some 'good' food. When I got there, his room was empty and the nurses told him he'd been released at 4:30. No one told me!! I haven't talked to him or my SIL yet, but when I do I'm going to rub in the fact he missed out on some food! I'm glad he's well enough to be released, though.

I finished filing my Federal and State taxes. I usually have things planned well enough that I get small refunds back. I file everything online and get direct deposit. So easy and hassle free!

Just Another Manic Monday

Brrr! It’s COLD out there! The thermometer says 8 below zero F. Forecasters say with windchill factored in, it’s about 20-30 below in the frozen tundra of northern Illinois!

I woke up this morning to a huge mess made by my little dog, Celeste. Sometime during the night she got sick. Not only once… but 3 times! They weren’t just little messes either. It was disgusting!! How can such a little thing make such a nasty mess? (Think liquidy, smelly baby diapers, and you’ll have a good idea)

My car is still acting up. About twice a month now I find that the battery is dead and I can’t start my car. Even though I still have my brother’s battery charger, I went out and bought myself one. I had a 2nd mechanic look at the car today. He had the same diagnosis as the other one. Battery fine. Alternator fine. Starter fine. Basically, neither one knows why the battery goes dead on the car. The 2nd one did say that the serpentine belts need to be replaced and they could be causing the problem if they’re slipping. Aside from replacing parts on a whim, there isn’t anything they can do until something BIG happens. Nice diagnosis!! I guess in a couple weeks, I’ll have the belts replaced and see if that helps.

I finished my Project Challenge!!! I finished up a scissors fob for an exchange I'm in for another group. Can't show the pics yet until the person gets it. I’ve managed to get some stitching done over the past several days. I’ve been working on my OLDEST UFO, Mime. It's a Candamar kit my brother bought me over 15 years ago. I think it's about time I get it finished, don't you? I've updated my stash-for-sale album, too... if anyone is interested.

My online meteorology class has kept me very, very busy! It's all I can do to keep caught up… reading the textbook, doing workbook assignments, participating in online discussion threads, and viewing the online slideshows! The nice thing about it is... We have opportunities for extra credit by participating in online discussion threads. My first quiz will be this week. I took the practice quiz and got a 93% so hopefully I do as well on the real one.

Since there was a parting of the ways with D, all of a sudden I've got several people who are interested in going on dates with me. Funny how that works... You don't go on dates forever, and then all of a sudden there are 5! Go figure.

Saturday night, I took my nephew to the Monster Truck Thunder Nationals for his birthday. He will be turning 11 this week. It's become an annual birthday ritual since I've taken him every year since he was 4. He looks forward to it. LOL, for me... once you've seen one truck run over a car, you've seen them all. However, I'd rather spend the money and time with him creating these memories than to buy a toy that will be forgotten 5 years from now. Every year I buy him a tshirt… and every year he gets a Grave Digger tshirt. LOL I also get him a program book. After the show, we stand in line so he gets autographs of all the drivers. This year, the lucky boy got an extra tshirt from one of the ATV racers at the show. The back was autographed by all the ATV racers! How fun is that for a 10yr old boy??

When I was with my nephew, he said his Dad had been sick. Today, I got a text message from my SIL telling me that he’d passed out at work and was taken to the ER. Turns out he has pneumonia... and will probably be staying in the hospital for at least a day. I’m sure that he didn’t go to the Dr. prior to this… takes after my Dad like that. Don’t go until you fall to the floor!
